Chef Bernard Casavant is one of our valued volunteers working ‘behind the scenes’ as part of our committee, helping to guide the program. Based in Kelowna, Chef Bernard been an important part of our team since day one. With over four decades of experience in Vancouver, Whistler, and Kelowna, Chef Bernard is a bit of a living legend. You’ll even find his name among the inductees of the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame and Chef’s Society.

Chef Bernard has been an advocate of farm-to-table dining since the mid-80s (i.e. before it was cool!) and has been an “organic supporter forever”. He was also the original chair person of the Whistler Farmer’s Market, working to promote local food and give back in his community.

Proud husband to Bonnie Casavant (the gardener extraordinaire and tomato whisperer), Chef B is also the father of two children and the VERY proud grandpa to three grandsons; Weston (5), Jackson (7) and Carter (4).

Heirloom tomato

What’s something you’ve learned from Chefs in the Classroom?

How much the kids enjoy the easy interaction with the passionate volunteers.

Do you have a favourite kid-friendly recipe you’d like to share?

Whatever is in the fridge, just cook, have fun.

Too many others, but I love working with my grandson’s with  handmade tortellinis, in a rich chicken broth. They love the fact they hand formed the tiny pasta. And of course, hand micro planing the Parmigiano. Super easy. Especially as our boys are lego experts! ☺

What makes volunteering with Chefs in the Classroom awesome?

The kids. Watching them enjoy real food and listening to the stories as they influence Mom and Dad’s food purchases!

Anything else you’d like to share with the class?

Humbled by the commitment of our awesome volunteers. We are making the difference, enriching these kids lives. Humbled.
